We have decided to launch a Sports Twitter Account as a way of letting you know about some of the fantastic sporting events that go on in our school.

We appreciate that many of you may not use Twitter currently, or may have questions about how the school in going to be using this service. Please read on to find out more!

What is Twitter? How do I use it?

  • Twitter is a website (twitter.com) which you can log onto via a computer, but can also be downloaded as an app on both Android and iOS devices.
  • Individual people, companies and other organisations use Twitter as a form of communication. We will be using it to keep you informed about the sporting activities going on in school.
  • A ‘Tweet’ is a comment that the holder of the account makes (limited to 140 characters and can be accompanied by a photo). The tweet will reach any of the account holder’s ‘followers’.
  • Every person that has a Twitter account has a ‘Twitter handle’ – ours is @CecilSports, which you will need to search, then follow. If you sign up, you’ll need to also create your own twitter ‘handle’, which could be something to do with your name, or interests.

As you get used to the website, there are some terms to get used to, including:

  • “Retweet” – this is when someone chooses to re-publish a message made by someone they are following.
  • “Hashtag” – People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorise those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Clicking on a ‘hashtagged’ word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.

The School’s approach:

  • Mr Neville will be able to ‘tweet’ from the school’s account. He will share snapshots of sporting events or any sport related news.
  • The school will have a ‘private’ account, meaning you will have to ‘follow us’ in order to see our Tweets.
  • To make this manageable, please understand this will be a one-way form of communication, and won’t be used to respond to concerns or questions sent via a comment or 'Direct Message'. Please continue to contact the school directly for important matters.
  • No photos will be taken of children whose parents do not want them featured on our Twitter Account. If you have already indicated you don’t want your child’s photo on the website, we will not use it for Twitter either. If you do not want your child to be photographed for the purpose of Twitter, and haven’t already told us you don’t want your child’s photo used on our website, please opt out by putting this in writing for the school.

We will begin using the Twitter service in June and look forward to seeing lots of you signing up and following.
