Key Stage 1
The DfE introduced a new primary accountability system which has reformed primary assessment in 2016. This includes a new ‘expected standard’ (a higher standard than in previous years) for children in Year 2. New National Curriculum tests are used in Year 2, but for final assessment data the test score is used to inform teacher assessment is used.

Key Stage 2
The DfE introduced a new primary accountability system which has reformed primary assessment in 2016. This includes a new ‘expected standard’ (a higher standard than in previous years) for children in Year 6. Alongside new National Curriculum tests in English, Reading and Mathematics, with outcomes reported as a scaled scores ranging from 80 to 120 rather than levels. Writing is assessed via teacher assessment.
A scaled score of 100 is the ‘expected standard’, this allows schools and the DfE to track progress as well as attainment for the children.
