Welcome to Year 3! The children are now in Key Stage 2 which is very exciting. We learn lots of new skills as well as building on the skills we have learnt in EYFS and Key Stage 1. Throughout the year we will learn how to build on our basic sentence writing by including adverbs, adjectives and making sure we select the correct punctuation for the type of sentence we are writing. This is very important as it helps us to access the whole curriculum. In English, we look at narrative, non-chronological reports and poetry. Applying our well-practised phonics knowledge to all our writing activities.
In year 3 we value the importance of reading at home and encourage all the children to read for enjoyment. Thanks to the Accelerated Reader programme, the children can choose from a wide selection of books to enjoy in school and at home.
We look at different scientific topics throughout the year, including light and shadow, forces and plants and animals. We enjoy planning investigations, learning about how we can make it a fair test, and using scientific knowledge to test our hypotheses.
All the children in year 3 receive login details for Doodle, DuoLingo and TT Rockstars and homework is set through these for the children to complete at home.
The topics covered by History and Geography, Art and DT in Year 3 include 'The Stone Age', 'Antarctica', 'Egyptians' and 'Volcanoes'. During the year the children will have the opportunity to take part in lots of workshops and activities to enhance their learning, such as visits to museums, investigating our local area and workshops lead by experts such as local historians and local artists.
