Cecil Road Primary & Nursery

Year 6

Teachers: Miss Hanley and Mrs Picciola

Support Staff: Mrs Gill and Mrs Matthews

Our teachers love teaching Year 6. Year 6 at our school is carefully planned to help prepare our children for secondary school. At Cecil Road, we love to provide our Year 6 children with valuable memories that they will be able to cherish in the future, including the Year 6 sleepover, residential and non-residential, production, Year 6 leavers disco and educational school trips.

Throughout the year, our English focus is blending the skills taught in prior year group teaching such as SPaG and figurative language techniques with advanced sentence structure, ensuring all our children leave primary school as confident, independent writers.

Our class texts are sequenced to ensure the children are exposed to a wide range of text, such as, Oliver Twist to Darwin’s Dragons and Crater Lake. We love to pick exciting books that our children will enjoy reading, linking this reading work to writing tasks during our English lessons.

As with prior year groups, home reading is actively encouraged using Accelerated Reader. Children progress at a right level for them, reading a book of their choice and quizzing online to check their comprehension. We encourage the children to take ownership of their home reading, letting their teachers know when they need an assessment or new book.

We strongly believe that it is important for our Year 6 children to gain independence ahead of secondary school. Homework is set online via Doodle and all children are expected to complete the set work for English, Maths and Spelling.
